hi tessy,
Thanks for your note. Well i'm not a trained marine biologist, but i am currently working in a marine biology/ecology project. The AWI is a really nice institute, definitely worth taking a look at. This is just one field station, the headquarters is in Bremerhaven and there are several other field stations and research ships throughout the world. It's a huge institute. On Sylt they deal mostly with coastal ecosystems and marine biology. Right now the biggest topic going on is the combined impact of invasive species and climate change on the Waddensea ecosystem. Really exciting, and that's why I'm here. I'm researching an invasive clam and the effect of milder winters on its success here. In the end I'm trying to determine if it might partially be responsible for the reduced algal blooms after warmer winters. Since algae (phytoplankton) plays a very important role in marine ecosystems as well as the global climate system, I figure it's important to know what is impacting it. Have a look at the AWI website: www.awi.de More specifically regarding the Sylt station: http://www.awi.de/de/institut/standorte/sylt/
I hope that helps some. Just let me know if you have other questions. Is there a specific area you're most interested in? Do you want to study marine biology? The univserity of Bremen has a partnership with AWI and they even have some courses here. Hamburg does as well and I think Kiel too.
all the best for your volunteer year in luebeck!
take care,
eric
Welcome to the network! Do you already have an organisation you volunteer for? Or do you have any special interests in environmental protection? If so, we are happy to help you and give you advice or inspiration.....und wenn Du lieber auf Deutsch schreiben willst, ist das auch kein Problem ;o)
