Hi Eric,

germanwatch does great work in this field indeed.

I'm very excited about Kopenhaagen, since I believe that crucial decisions about adaptation will be taken there. Unfortunately, much of the discussion will have happened beforehand but people only see Kopenhaagen which I consider to be very shortsighted.

To my mind, adaptation strategies will need to be set on 2 trecks: Considering the financial capacities of the industrialised countries their adaptaion strategies will focus on very different issues than the problems developing countries will face. I consider the support for these countries to be most important, since it would enhance them to leapfrogg and avoid many (technological) mistakes, the industrialised countries have made. Especially important players such as India and China need to implement most efficient solutions, considering the (social, environmental or economical) development at stake.

Looking forward to a vital discussion

Caren

Thanks for joining Johannes! Yes that's the trouble, by the time a plan is implemented, it's time for making a new plan...I think it is difficult to find regional data regarding most probable impacts of climate change (at least outside of Europe). But perhaps there's a chance that the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research would have regional data in the Carribbean...As far as strategies that work..it might be too early to tell. However, very interesting, you will find the National Adaptation Programs of Action (including Haiti) here:
http://unfccc.int/cooperation_support/least_developed_countries_portal/submitted_napas/items/4585.php

Of course you are probably already familiar with this since it's organized by the GEF, your financier...Without digging around for a while, I can't give you too much right now. But give me some time and I might be able to help some more. Take care!

Adaptation is going to be a hot topic for Copenhaagen and is being discussed this week in Bonn at the preparation for the COP. There are many issues to international adaptation, which should focus on helping those nations that are most impacted by climate change yet have caused the fewest emissions. Here are some links for further information regarding the adaptation topic:

(This is the latest stance the Parties took last month)
Also a great NGO that is highly involved in supporting a fair deal for developing nations is Germanwatch. Here they have more info on adaptation policy:

A lot is in German, but there are many papers in English as well. Here are some of the docs:

before we start a "discussion" in the sense of this blog forum, I just leave a comment to say "hello" and that I am on board, too, interested in exchange with you fellow Erdenkinder because we are facing the impacts of CC already and have to prepare for the inevitable to come, while mitigating the evitable. I am working on a project proposal for GEF-financing which aims at strengthening of local capacities in coastal cities of Haiti to face and adapt to climate change. If the proposal get approval by Sept./Oct. of this year, implementation might start even before the end of this year. The next series of hurricanes might have drowned the island by then. So... no time to lose!
I am interested in scientific news on most probable scenarios, the probable implications, and where and which adaptation measures offer promising results. Looking forward to our exchange on this, keep posting!

best Johannes
